I've been on a bit of a Red Dwarf binge lately, which has had an obvious influence on my artwork. So here's this:
The Columbus 3 was a Space Corps vessel on which Howard Rimmer served. (Red Dwarf Series X, Episode 1: 'Trojan'.)
A Quantum Twister class vessel, the Columbus 3 was part of the Space Corps Infinity Fleet, exploring Deep Space. It was equipped with powerful engines and long range teleporters.
Millions of years into deep space the Columbus 3 was seemingly attacked by a hostile force and Howard was one of two survivors, Sim Crawford being the other.
They sent out a distress call to any Space Corps vessel and, due to the coincidental nature of the Quantum rod, he managed to get through to his brother Arnold aboard the SS Trojan, whom Howard recalled as being a "complete twat".
Model by me, based on the S.S. Trojan model by @steve_howarth
Background info: I've always loved the original S.S. Trojan model that Steve Howarth built, but my one criticism would be that it looks a bit 'busy' and slapped together, mostly because it was! Steve was really under the pump to create this back when it was needed. With little time and even less money available, the model (https://www.modelminiatures.co.uk/dwarfxtrojshop.htm) had to be built from toy scraps. Considering the constraints he was under, I think Steve did an amazing job and this model remains one of my all time favourite ships in the Red Dwarf series (apart from the big Rougue One herself and Starbug, of course). So here's my little kinda reacreation in homage to Steve's original model. Not quite as complex looking. And a keen eye may spot elements of Ace Rimmer's 'Wildfire' ship and even a bit of Kryten's 'Nova 5' in there as well. Although the 'Columbus 3' was never seen on-screen, it can be reasonably assumed that it was similar to the Trojan. However, since Howard and Crawford were impressed by the technology of the Trojan and asked for a tour, the Columbus 3 was perhaps an older model or variant.
